WHAT IS CONTAINER TRANSPORT?

Transportation of containers is the most common way of transporting products around the world.

Some 80% of world trade is made by shipping container transport.

Containers come in a variety of sizes and type, the commodity and dimensions determine the type of container that would be used.

In general, we talk about 20’ containers / 40’ containers / 40’ reefer containers (for cargoes that need temperature control) 20’ and 40’ flat racks / 20’ and 40’ open tops (used when the dimensions of the cargo will not fit to a standard container.

Containers can be loaded to ocean going ships, they can also be used for rail transport – the Chinese / Russian market being a good example of that.

Door to Door service.

Containers can be positioned at the exporter’s premises for loading.

Then the container is transported to the nearest port for shipment to the destination port.

At the destination port the container is delivered to the required unloading point via road vehicle.

Safety

Before the advent of container shipping in the early 1970s cargo transported via sea was sent on general cargo ships. Cargo would be stowed in the ships hold and on arrival at the destination port would be unloaded to a dock side warehouse and then sent via truck to the destination. In this case cargo could easily be lost or stolen.

Containers are seen as a very safe way and secure way of transporting cargo.

After a standard container or reefer is loaded and the doors are closed a bolt seal is attached to the doors. The seal in only removed at the final unloading point.

Where is my container?

In most cases the container can be automatically tracked, from the moment it is loaded until it reaches the ultimate destination.

Who arranges container transport?

The best option is to employ a freight forwarder who co-ordinates the entire container movement.

Agora Freight manages this with on-line rates and a personal service after a booking is made.
